We're going back to Chicama, Peru in May 2026! Join us to experience the world's longest wave.

Trip Overview

Blueye Explores has spent years curating high-end, experience-driven journeys to some of the world’s most iconic watersports destinations. With three consecutive years of returning to Chicama, our team brings intimate, hard-earned local knowledge of both the wave and the town—earned through time on the ground, season after season—at the longest left-hand wave on the planet.

For Blueye Explores Chicama, we bring together world-class waves, deep local expertise, and a perfectly curated plan built specifically for premium wave riding—an unforgettable wing and tow-foil experience where exploration, performance, and fun naturally converge.

Chicama itself is predominantly a fishing town that caters to water sports travelers, offering a uniquely authentic, laid-back backdrop for endless adventure. Our trips there are intentionally foiling-only, focusing on tow-foiling and wingfoiling what’s widely regarded as the world’s longest wave, where long, rolling left-hand swells allow for sessions as long as your legs can take. Morning tow-foil sessions seamlessly flow into afternoon wingfoiling when the wind rolls in, while the surrounding hills, cliffs, and arid landscapes create a stunning and wild visual backdrop at every shoreline.

Through Blueye, guests receive highly personalized guidance, ensuring wingers and foilers make the most of every session, conditions permitting. From reading swell, wind, and tides to dialing in equipment, launch timing, and session flow, every detail of the program is intentionally designed to elevate the quality of your time riding this legendary wave.

Beyond the water, Chicama offers a rich cultural experience—exceptional fresh seafood, warm local hospitality, and a slower rhythm that encourages recovery between sessions. Guests unwind in refined comfort at Hotel Los Delfines, which serves as a relaxed yet elevated base for the week.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the expected weather conditions?

Expect temperatures between 60–80°F.

  • Morning: 60–70°F with lighter winds (8–15 mph)
  • Mid-day: 75–85°F with winds building to 20–30 mph
  • Evening: 60–65°F as temperatures cool

Winds generally start SE and shift to S (side-offshore) as the day warms. Chicama sits in a coastal desert region and receives minimal rainfall (less than 1 inch per year).

Where is the foiling location?

The primary foiling launch spot is La Punta, the furthest point up the Chicama point break. Predominant south winds and favorable seafloor contours create groomed swell lines that run for miles down the point and mellow as they approach the Chicama section.

With swells reaching 8–10 feet, this section forms the most famous part of Chicama. The wave is fast, well-shaped, and breaks over soft sand, and is widely known as the longest left-hand wave in the world. The desert coastline backdrop also makes for exceptional photo and video opportunities.

What should foilers consider about conditions?

Wave Conditions

  • May typically offers consistent swells of 3–6 feet
  • Ideal for intermediate and advanced wing foilers and tow foilers

Wind

  • Offshore winds are weaker in the morning
  • Afternoon winds often increase, making it ideal to: Tow foil in the morning / Wing foil in the afternoon

Skill Level

  • Chicama’s long, smooth waves are best suited for intermediate to advanced riders looking to maximize ride length and improve their technique.

Which airport should I fly into and how do I get to the hotel?

Participants should arrive at Trujillo Airport (TRU) by 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 23, 2026. A group shuttle will transport participants and their equipment from the airport to the hotel in Chicama.

  • Shuttle drive time: approximately 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Planned arrival: around 12:30 PM in time for lunch

If the schedule changes, participants will be informed in advance.

What gear should I bring?

Wetsuits

  • 3/2mm full wetsuit is typically sufficient
  • 4/3mm wetsuit recommended for early morning tow sessions
  • Bringing two wetsuits is recommended for multiple daily sessions

Inflatable Wings

  • Suggested sizes: 4m–6m, depending on wind conditions and personal preference

Wing & Tow Foils

  • Medium to high-aspect foils are recommended for efficiency and glide
  • A foil with strong pumping ability helps connect wave sections
  • Front wing sizing depends on rider weight and skill level:
    Larger wings for easier takeoffs and smaller waves;
Smaller wings for maneuverability and performance
  • 85 cm mast recommended (75 cm or 95 cm also workable)

Wing & Tow Boards

  • Wing board: stable and maneuverable for long clean waves
  • Tow board: bring one board with some volume for waiting between waves or paddling if needed
  • Strapless boards recommended for safety

  • Waist leash for wing
  • Extra leashes
  • Travel pump

  • A local bank can exchange larger bills

Recommended:

  • Bring clean, untorn $20 bills
  • Bring approximately $500 USD in cash for gratuities and incidental expenses

Are there special electricity requirements?

No adapters are required. Peru uses standard US-style 120V electrical plugs, so devices can be charged normally.

Is there air conditioning in the hotel?

The hotel does not have air conditioning. However, Chicama’s coastal desert winds provide natural cooling. Rooms are equipped with large ceiling fans that circulate air effectively.
